Mission Statement:

Community Works partners with local civic, church, school, and community groups to strengthen rural communities and restore trust and neighborliness across political differences.

Description of Initiative

Volunteers from Page County are joining with three other Virginia counties to build a new effort called Community Works. Many of us are also Page County Democrats who are committed to working with our neighbors, regardless of political party, to address concrete local needs. While politicians in Washington and Richmond are busy fighting partisan battles, our goal is to rebuild trust and find common ground. People in our community have a wide range of opinions, but that shouldn’t stop us from working side- by-side on non-political efforts, such as:

• Organizing volunteers to help local pantries with food distribution to shut-ins;
• Enlisting retirees to teach GED classes, or personal finance management;
• Partnering with nonprofit groups to provide home maintenance and repair;
• Engaging local artists to offer activities for children;
• Sponsoring drives with local churches to collect and distribute baby care and essential household items;
• Participating in on-going service and problem-solving efforts throughout the county.

Volunteers Needed

Community Works is recruiting volunteer support to help Terri Mayes and her caring team prepare their 24th annual free Thanksgiving meals for our entire community at the Luray American Legion.

Volunteers needed:

November 26 – 27 – Looking for folks to just cook turkeys! Everything is provided- turkey, roasting pan.

We just need you to cook the turkey and drop it back off to us. For more details call: Terri at 540-244-7971.

November 27: 8am-Noon

• Event Preparations
• Setting up tables, chairs, food stations, and other event prep.

November 28: 9am-4pm

• Event support
• Food assembly line helpers.
• Drivers deliver meals to those without transportation.

Everyone is welcome to stop by and get a plate or just spend some time with others who may not have plans for Thanksgiving.

If you do not have transportation to attend and would like a free meal delivered please request a meal at: http://www.spinnersdinner.org/
